updated for version 7.3.1128 Problem: Now that the NFA engine handles everything every failure is a syntax error. Solution: Remove the syntax_error flag.

When you use the source distribution, "make install" is used to install Vim.
See the "INSTALL" file in the "src" directory.

If you use a compiled package, follow the instructions for the package.
