Solution: Make two passes through the script file.

To run the "Conway's game of life" macros:

  1.  Type ":so life.vim".  This loads the macros.
  2.  Type "g" to run the macros.
  3.  Type CTRL-C to interrupt.
  4.  Type ":q!" to get out.
